TATA IPL 2025 Match 47, RR vs GT - Match Report
Rajasthan Royals (RR) lit up the Sawai Mansingh Stadium as they made light work of what could have been a daunting task, chasing down a formidable 210-run target in just 15.5 overs with eight wickets to spare against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 47 of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) ending their five-match losing streak. In process, the Royals also created history by taking the least number of overs (15.5) to chase down a 200+ target in the history of the league.
Having been put into bat first, the visitors did most things right in the first half of the evening. Their openers, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, were off to a cautious yet good start, stitching a 93-run partnership for the first wicket before Maheesh Theekshana dismissed Sudharsan for 39.
The end of the partnership helped the Royals take a breather, but Shubman Gill continued the rampage from the other end. Gill, who was dropped on 33, went on to score a 29-ball half-century before Theekshana struck once again to bring an end to the GT skipper's 84-run knock with a brilliant low full toss.
RR picked up a couple of wickets in quick succession, dismissing Washington Sundar (13) and Rahul Tewatia (9) in 5 balls while Jos Buttler notched up a 26-ball half-century as the Titans' top three continued their rich form for this season. For the home side (Royals), their bowlers leaked plenty of runs throughout the match, with Maheesh Theekshana (2/35) being the pick of the bowlers. At the end of the 20 overs, the scoreboard read 209 for 4 wickets with the Royals needing 210 off 120 balls.
The chase began in a blaze, with Rajasthan Royals openers Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal making easy work of the run chase. They built a 166-run partnership for the first wicket to break the backbone of the GT bowlers.
14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi wasted no time in destroying one of the best bowling units, playing one of the most marvellous innings the league has ever seen. The youngster went out all guns blazing, scoring 28 runs off an Ishan Sharma over, before continuing his rampage against Washington Sundar, who went for 21 runs in his first over.
Vaibhav struck the ball with perfection and was looking to hit every ball sent his way, and in process notched up his maiden half-century in just 17 balls, the fastest by any player this season, and in process helped the Royals register their highest powerplay total of 87/0 in the history of the league.
While Rashid Khan controlled the runs from one end with a couple of economical overs, little did he know that Vaibhav Suryavanshi had different plans for the evening as he continued to take everyone by storm, hitting three sixes and as many fours off Karim Janat's over in his IPL debut. In the very next over, he launched a shot into the stands to bring up his maiden IPL century in just 35 balls.
Vaibhav's historic knock saw him break several records. He became the youngest player to score a century in the TATA Indian Premier League and also scored the second-fastest century of IPL (35) after Chris Gayle, who notched up a century in 30 balls, thereby getting a standing ovation from fans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium and both the dugouts.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, on the other hand, laid the foundation for the Rajasthan Royals and provided the youngster with the much-needed support. He brought up his fifty in 31 balls in the 12th over with a boundary.
When it looked like the two would finish the game by themselves, Prasidh Krishna delivered a perfect yorker to get rid of the dangerous Vaibhav Suryavanshi. His 101-run knock came to an end, but it was too late for the Titans as the damage was done, and there looked to be no scope for a comeback. The 14-year-old belted seven boundaries and 11 sixes during his time at the crease.
Nitish Rana joined Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle but departed in no time after scoring a boundary. Rashid Khan trapped the left-handed batter with a low full toss right in front of the stumps.
Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag then joined the party, playing a quick-fire knock of 32 off just 15 balls to seal the deal for the home side. Jaiswal remained unbeaten at 70 runs in 40 balls and in process completed a milestone of 2000 TATA IPL runs, providing Vaibhav and Riyan with good moral and tactical support on the other end.
The Royals chased down the target with 25 balls to spare and registered the highest target successfully chased against the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. They surpassed the previous total of 205 chased by Kolkata Knight Riders vs GT in IPL 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
With this win, the Royals have climbed to the eighth position in the IPL 2025 points table with six points (three wins and seven losses) from ten matches, while Gujarat Titans sit at third with 12 points from nine matches, courtesy of six wins and three losses.
